Director of Student Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
The role of the Director of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is to support the campus’s efforts to foster an inclusive campus environment for the student body; particularly those from under-represented and/or culturally diverse communities. The Director will work with students, employees, and community partners to improve support for students from culturally diverse and/or underrepresented communities. The Director will, in collaboration with campus and community partners, create educational opportunities that address diversity and inclusion issues to support an inclusive student body that includes but not limited to varying racial, ethnic, gender, and religious backgrounds. The office will also provide programming that exposes and educates the student body to promote diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Provide leadership in fostering an inclusive campus environment for students and community members from culturally diverse and/or underrepresented communities including but not limited to: BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, First-Generation, and students from impoverished areas.
- Help students from culturally diverse and/or underrepresented communities’ access funding sources (e.g., local grants and financial aid).
- Develop and implement college sponsored programs that celebrate diversity, such as Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, Native American Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and LGBTQ History Month.
- Assist in the academic advising for culturally diverse students for increased retention and program completion.
- Serve as a resource for faculty and staff to develop their ability to support students from culturally diverse and/or underrepresented communities.
- Remain cross-trained in academic advising and related areas.
- Maintain appropriate records and data, including generation of reports for institutional planning and state reporting.
- Plan and coordinate with campus and community partners in recruitment-related outreach to culturally diverse communities.
- Serve as advisor/treasurer for student clubs/organizations as needed
- Develop strategies to engage culturally diverse students (i.e. event promotion, outreach, policy updates, etc.).
- Serve as coordinator of the Multicultural Advisory Committee (a group of Mid-Shore residents and college staff) as well as serve on committees and working groups focused on diversity, equity and inclusion as requested.
- Maintain office budget.
- Support and advocate for underrepresented students and/or students who are marginalized due to sex, race, ethnicity, national origin, language, religion, age, gender identity and expression, ability, sexual orientation, marital status, etc.
- Create ongoing opportunities for training and leadership development for culturally student leaders to build a more inclusive campus community.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or a related field; Master’s preferred
- Two (2) years’ experience in an educational setting (preferably in the area of multicultural services, admissions or academic advising/support and/or a related field) or in a business- related setting in which job responsibilities include working with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion work and social justice education and the ability to appropriately and effectively understand and adapt to cultural difference within a group environment.
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Strong technology skills, including experience using social engagement tools for outreach or public communications.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis and travel to various locations (schools, businesses, churches, etc.) in the Mid-Shore service region.
- College student recruitment and retention experience preferred.
- Conflict resolution and team-building experience preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.
- Works occasionally/primarily in an office/administrative setting;
- Occasional/Regular travel may be required;
- Regular meetings offsite within the five-county service area which may include evenings and weekends
