Managing Editor
The Tribune-Review is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Managing Editor to manage our team of award-winning journalists.
As a senior-level manager, the managing editor will work under the direction of the Executive Editor to oversee a multi-platform newsroom in the highly competitive Western Pennsylvania market. This accomplished leader will play a crucial role in setting the editorial direction for the Trib’s news coverage.
The Managing Editor will work closely with a team of editors, reporters, photographers and multimedia producers in two newsrooms to create content for the company’s two core print publications – the Westmoreland and Valley News Dispatch editions of the Tribune-Review – and TribLIVE.com, the most visited news website in Western Pennsylvania.
The Tribune-Review has been named best overall newspaper by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Journalists for three consecutive years.

We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic, creative and passionate about local journalism – and someone who can roll up their sleeves and work alongside reporters and editors to stay on top of the news.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of management experience in a leading news organization and a proven track-record of managing a team of journalists (experience managing other editors preferable).
- Strong writing and editing skills, sound news judgment and the ability to identify news opportunities and trending issues.
- Experience planning daily news budgets, long-term projects and shepherding watchdog journalism.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask and shift gears without losing sight of details.
- Collaborative spirit and willingness to work with other newsroom leaders to find creative and compelling ways to tell impactful stories.
- Experience coaching and directing journalists, including setting priorities, writing performance reviews, and guiding them as they determine story treatment.
- Willingness to motivate the staff and create a culture of team work.
- Outstanding interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Thorough understanding of news analytics, SEO principles, social media best practices and content management systems.
- While this is a dayside position, the managing editor must be willing to work under emergency or breaking news conditions, sometimes on evenings, weekends and holidays.
Some of the responsibilities include:
- Day-to-day supervision and managing of newsroom. This includes running daily news meetings; suggesting, assigning and developing stories and projects; collaborating with other editors to produce two editions of daily newspapers and content for the website; prioritizing content across multiple platforms; overseeing news budgets.
- Partnering with the executive editor to set the department’s goals and strategy and to execute editorial projects such as coaching newsroom managers, training reporters and other staff members.
- Helping oversee day-to-day operations of the newsroom including the multimedia desk and print copy desk, designers and photographers.
- Collaborating with other departments to fulfill the company’s mission and overall business goals.
