- Assigns diagnostic and procedural codes using appropriate classification systems (3M Codefinder) for outpatient diagnostic testing, emergency room, ambulatory surgery and observation records
- Ensures accuracy (detail oriented)
- Statistical information
- Provide severity adjusted data for clinical efficiency
- Assigns APC's (Ambulatory Payment Classification) to all outpatient visits ensuring appropriate reimbursement for services
- Apply local and national coverage determination policies regarding medical necessity to all Medicare outpatient accounts to ensure appropriate reimbursement(s)
- Validate all outpatient charges
- Review daily systems generated error reports to correct or complete data elements in the patient financial system
- Abide by NMHS Coding Compliance Policy, ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT Coding
- Guidelines, Standards, and Ethical Coding
- Compliance with national and local coverage determination issues
- Assists ancillary departments with determining appropriate CPT codes for their charges
- Assists Business Services and patients with inquiries regarding the coding on bills
- Attends, demonstrates, and participates in required in-services, quarterly meetings, performance improvement activities, and other educational programs
- Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines
- Complies with applicable Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statues
Requirements:
- Associates Degree in Health Information Technology or related health care field; required
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS); required
- 3 years previous coding experience with ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding schemes; preferred
- Pre-screening assessment cumulative average score of 80% or higher, preferred
- Knowledgeable in APC reimbursement system; required
- Knowledge of medical terminology; require
- Completion of basic Anatomy course; required
- Ability to read and interpret medical record documentation; required
- Working knowledge of computers and computer programs; required
- Excellent written and verbal communication; required
- Minimum of 90-days on-site training
