Facilities Technician I - Plumbing Assistant

This is an entry level project position. Coordinates campus water quality flushing and performs maintenance and repairs of plumbing systems, equipment and fixtures under the direct supervision of campus plumber and crafts worker supervisor. Assist other skilled trades as required to allow the University to function at a normal operating capacity with a minimal amount of interruptions. Perform work in a safe, efficient and timely manner. Employee shift is 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills in working with a diverse community.
  • Basic computer skills including email, internet and record keeping.
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate work with plumber, staff, students and other trades.
  • Work independently and as part of a team environment and on collaborative efforts.
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Attention to detail and craftsmanship

Preferred

  • Experience in construction industry.
  • General knowledge of plumbing equipment, fixtures and systems.
  • Ability to follow through with directions and work in a team environment.

 

Special Requirements

  • A valid Wisconsin driver’s license is required for the operation of all state licensed vehicles.
  • Ability to obtain O&M Asbestos training/certification

 

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand for long periods of time, climb ladders, stoop, crouch, climb stairways, crawl, turn, kneel and balance.

  • Lifting up to 50lb. objects is required along with pushing or pulling carts loaded with several hundred pounds
  • Breathing masks are required to be worn during some construction duties

 

Working Conditions and Environment

Employee must be able to work in partially lit spaces, confined spaces, dusty and/or dirty spaces, on raised platforms/ladders and in extreme temperatures. Employee must wear safety toe shoes during entire shift and is responsible to wear additional PPE as determined necessary by employee/supervisor during the course of job duties.

 

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Facilities Management is comprised of Building Maintenance and Grounds, Custodial Services, Heating Plant, Administration, and Facilities Planning and Engineering. The campus is comprised of 2.4 million square feet on approximately 135 acres including 55 buildings of which 22 are academic/research, 12 support services and 21 for university housing. The campus has its own utilities of steam, chilled water, data and electricity.
